When my uncle asked me years ago to sort out his wonderful collection of books when he died I said “Yes” without really thinking about it. These things do come to pass and I was faced with finding a home for over 1000 or so books in a number of different collections (vintage film, 19 th Century travel books on Spain amongst others – Uncle was nothing if not eclectic.) I advertised online on a specialist book site, and the rag bag collection of 19th Century Americana attracted a lot of interest from the USA, and I finally agreed on a price much more than I would have thought possible! I was then faced with having to get the books to the purchaser in Connecticut, and not knowing anything about shipping to USA I had to do some research. There are a number of different companies offering delivery services of small numbers of boxes, though it appeared there was a weight limit on each box size. Postal Services did not guarantee a secure enough transit for what were quite elderly books, and so I chose a company offering to ship my uncle’s books in two of their Book Cartons of 1.9cu ft. They provided the cartons, though I still wrapped each book in bubble wrap to make sure they would be safe in transit. The time for delivery was not express, but this was not as essential as security. I could have sent them more cheaply, but peace of mind was paramount! The purchaser, a collector was delighted so they got to a good home, which was what mattered.
